My teaching philosophy grounds itself on sharing with students my knowledge, values, and feelings. During my experience as a student and teacher, I realized the importance of being a complete educator, who guides students to go beyond the material by learning how to express and accept different values, attitudes, and feelings. I believe students learning a foreign language should work in a welcoming environment that embraces values such as trust, respect, and diversity. First, it is important that students develop trust in themselves by feeling confident about the acquired knowledge. Typically, I encourage them to talk, discuss with me and with other students. Second, we always maintain an open and respectful dialogue in which we share opinions and thoughts. Finally, diversity is one of my core teaching values.Through different activities, I help students recognize the richness of intercultural relationships, in which they interchange diverse ideas, lifestyles, and dialects, knowing that there is not an absolute correct or well-used language. Another goal of my teaching is to encourage students to adopt a positive attitude toward applying the class contents in real-life contexts. I pursue this goal by clearly establishing my expectations while being open to students’ feedback. On the one hand, I expect them to complete their assignment, participate in class, and support their peers. On the other hand, I strive to adjust the content to the class specific needs, by welcoming student’s suggestions as well as adopting different methodologies matching students’ capabilities. For example, while a student may remember better with visual memory, others are better with practice, grammar, or careful listening. Hence, the textbook is no longer enough, but it should be complemented with technology trends (e.g., social media). During my teaching experience, I have understood the importance of letting students express their feelings. This helps students to start a conversation and participate without being concerned of mistakes. By sharing their opinions and thoughts, students can really contribute to class. In turn, this also motivates other students to take part to the conversation and apply their knowledge. The goal is to teach my students that it is possible to achieve their objectives with passion and strong values. Finally, my teaching philosophy also aims to impact students’ lives by teaching them how to bring these values, attitudes, and feelings to other classes and in their life. My students should create and form their own principles and values while being respectful and accepting and valuing the difference of others.
